Crack Down on Noisy Vehicles

On some streets, loud exhausts and car stereos are a regular nuisance. Residents can report a noisy vehicle, but once it has gone, it’s hard to prove how loud it was.

Excessive vehicle noise is already against the law. ACT will make those rules easier to enforce in neighbourhoods where the problem keeps coming back.

Read ACT’s full policy, Crack Down on Noisy Vehicles, here.

ACT will:

  • Introduce relocatable noise cameras that can be deployed in communities with persistent problems, collecting evidence when a noisy vehicle passes.

  • Set enforceable roadside noise limits of 86 decibels on roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less, and 90 decibels on roads with speed limits above 50 km/h and up to 70 km/h.

  • Increase penalties for excessive vehicle noise, treating noise from equipment inside the vehicle consistently with noise from its engine or exhaust.

In our team’s words:

ACT's Tāmaki Candidate James Christmas says:

“Hard working Kiwis shouldn’t be punished by people who can’t take personal responsibility for their noise. Noise cameras enable evidence of offending to be collected the moment the offence occurs.

“Pairing technology with clear standards and real consequences will give residents the peace and quiet they deserve and ensure the comfort of many isn’t sacrificed for the noise of a few.”
